Choose the right boxes and bags
Packing in large moving boxes and sturdy plastic bags saves a lot of time on moving day compared with small boxes and carrier bags. Banana boxes are often free at the supermarket. They are sturdy and work well for books and other heavy items.
Fill the boxes completely, but not too full
The boxes have to be stacked on top of each other. If they are half full, they can collapse. If they are overfilled or have no lid, they cannot be stacked, and you lose space that at worst means an extra trip.
Label every box clearly
Write which room the box is going to, and ideally a little about the contents, especially glass, china and other fragile items. The move goes faster, the risk of damage is lower, and you do not have to move everything around afterwards.
Twelve practical packing tips
- China and glass should be wrapped in tissue paper or bubble wrap before going into the box.
- Pictures and paintings should be wrapped in bubble wrap or similar.
- Label with a thick marker, so you know what is in the box and which room it belongs in.
- Lock or strap the doors on cupboards and sideboards, so they do not open during the move.
- Empty the drawers. If the furniture is sturdy and not too heavy, contents that can handle a little shaking can stay.
- Fridges and freezers should be switched off at least an hour before the move, ideally defrosted. Let them stand for a few hours in the new place before switching them back on.
- The dishwasher we are happy to disconnect for you, and install it again in your new home.
- Check flat pack furniture. Not all of it can handle being moved. If you suspect loose screws, check the furniture or let us know before we lift it.
- Cover light coloured furniture and mattresses. An old sheet over the sofa or mattress prevents stains.
- Take important papers yourself. Passports, bank cards and documents are easy to lose in a box you think contains something else entirely.
- Hazardous chemicals and explosives must not be part of the load. If they are, it is at your own risk.
- Pack a separate box for the first evening with clothes, food, toothbrush, soap and bedding, and label it well.
