As a moving company we are happy to do everything. But most of our customers want the bill to be as low as possible, and then it pays to prepare well. Here is the advice we give everyone who is moving.
Before moving day
- Book a moving company early. Others often want to move on the same day as you, and then it is first come, first served. If possible, avoid the last week of the month and the weeks before school starts. Remember that movers take summer holidays too.
- Report your move to the National Population Register. Do it in good time, so post and official letters reach the right address.
- Order a change of address. Notify newspapers, subscriptions, your bank, insurance and others you receive post from, as the letters arrive.
- Read the electricity meter. Give your electricity supplier the meter reading at both the old and the new address.
- Check your home contents insurance. We have goods in transit insurance, but if you have valuable items, check that your insurance applies during the move, or take out separate cover.
Clear out and throw away in good time
If it has been many years since you last moved, you probably have a lot you do not want to take with you. Start throwing things out early, and the load, and therefore the bill, can shrink considerably.
Pack smart
Large, sturdy boxes, clear labels and properly filled boxes make moving day much easier. We have gathered all our tips in a separate guide on how to pack for a move.
On moving day
- Have everything packed. The more that is ready when we arrive, the faster it goes.
- Place the boxes near the exit. If it is a long way from the door to the van, the garage or hallway can be a good gathering point.
- Keep important papers with you. Passports, keys and documents are best transported by you.
- Have a box for the first evening. Clothes, food, toothbrush and bedding, ready when you arrive.
We hope this advice helps. Good luck with your move!
